Super Evil Megacorp has had more than 45 million players for its Vainglory multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game on smartphones, tablets, and the PC. But now the company is moving on, and it has raised $10.5 million to enable it to do so.
San Mateo, California-based Super Evil Megacorp is announcing its next game, code-named Project Spellfire. It has been in the works for the past 18 months. CEO Kristian Segerstrale said in an interview with GamesBeat that Spellfire will launch in 2020 and Rogue Games will take over Vainglory as its publisher.
“We’re really excited because we are taking all the lessons we’ve learned to date from Vainglory and are building something new and exciting,” Segerstrale said. “And in order to make that possible, we’ve been working for some time with Rogue in a partnership. They will take on the publishing work and building out Vainglory further, effectively allowing us to focus our resources on a future game.”

Segerstrale said the company is shifting from the “mobile-first” strategy that served it well with Vainglory to a “cloud-first” strategy with Spellfire. If you’re not sure what that means, that’s OK. It is kind of vague. But he said that the company will develop its game for all platforms, including mobile, PC, Mac and consoles.
“You should be able to pick up a device and play your favorite game with minimum friction,” Segerstrale said. “We think it is an incredibly important part of the future of gaming. And we are of course excited about when streaming will make that possible, but we would like to make sure that our design approach and technical approach makes that possible, even outside of outside of current streaming platforms.”
The funding comes from Andreessen Horowitz, the Silicon Valley venture capital fund that Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz run. The money will fund the new game, which will be crossplatform, multiplayer, and larger scale than Vainglory.
“It’s a new type of genre,” Segerstrale said.

Vainglory is more than 5 years old now, and it was a groundbreaking game in performance, graphical fidelity, and competitive play. The free-to-play title engaged players for more than 80 minutes a day.
But the scale necessary to keep it going as a mobile esport just wasn’t there. Super Evil tried to expand Vainglory’s reach a year ago by enabling crossplay on the PC and Mac. That was an impressive technical feat, and Segerstrale said he was inspired further by cross-platform, high-quality games such as Call of Duty: Mobile.
“Within five or 10 years from now, mass-market games will be released on all platforms so that people can play together across all platforms moving forward,” Segerstrale said. “Technically, for the past 18 months or so, we’ve been figuring out how to build out our engine in such a way as to support this form of cloud-first plan.”
New teams

Vainglory’s development team is going to change. First, Calabasas, California-based Rogue Games will support and update the game going forward with the help of a partner studio in India, nCore.
And Super Evil Megacorp cofounders Bo Daly and Stephen Sherman are leaving the company. They will go to work on a new project of their own. Segerstrale said that new team members at Super Evil Megacorp include Eduardo Gonzalez as art director (previously at Riot), and Volkan Ediz as chief revenue officer (previously Machine Zone).
Segerstrale said the company has been prototyping some new styles of gameplay for cross-platform play, and it is revamping its E.V.I.L. game engine and tools to enable new experiences. You can sign up for the beta for Spellfire here.
“We had a great experience bringing Vainglory to PC,” Segerstrale said. “I think we certainly have learned a lot about esports in general in terms of what it is and what it is not. I’m still absolutely convinced that the next decade will be a fundamental shift in the dynamics of the gaming industry, in that making triple-A, free-to-play games that are successful and are crossplatform. I continue to feel that this is the most exciting platform that I could work on to build for the future.”
Rogue’s approach

Meanwhile, Rogue Games CEO Mike DeLaet said a sizable team will be working on Vainglory. Five contractors from the Vainglory team will stay with the project. Rogue and the Indian company have 15 employees each. Those teams will spearhead live operations for Vainglory, such as running events or launching new skins for characters.
“We’ve loved Vainglory since the beginning,” DeLaet said. “My cofounder, Matt Casamassina, worked at Apple for a very long time. So he was instrumental in getting this game on stage back in the day. And it’s still a very successful product but we think we continue to grow and scale and nurture that community for years to come. Super Evil Megacorp is phenomenal and we would like pick up where they left off and make this a huge game for years to come.”
In the past 18 months, Rogue Games has grown quickly. It has signed 70 games and has released several notable mobile titles such as Wild Life: Puzzle Story, Chaos Battle League, Super Impossible Road, and Hexaflip. Vainglory represents Rogue Games’ first title published for PC.

DeLaet said they would work together for a smooth transition with monthly updates to Vainglory. He said he expects to be able to operate Vainglory profitably. Historically, Vainglory has had a strong following in Asia and the U.S., but DeLaet said the company will operate it as an international game. And it will add new features such as characters from other universes.
Games Like Vainglory For Mac Torrent
Super Evil Megacorp has a team of about 30 people, which is below its peak a couple of years ago. But Segerstrale said the company is hoping to be more efficient with a distributed development environment.
“This will be at a larger scale than things that we’ve done before,” Segerstrale said. “As a company, we are are incredibly driven by innovation and breaking boundaries in the industry. So this kind of thing where we feel like we’re putting out an experience that perhaps players haven’t seen before.”
Super Evil Megacorp said that Vainglory, the company’s mobile-based multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title, is going cross platform on Windows and the Mac in early 2019.

“We’ve been working really hard to build triple-A games on mobile with touchscreens,” he said. “This year, it became clear to us that gaming is evolving from a platform-specific focus to a universe in the future where gaming is gaming, and you don’t think about the platform first. Fortnite has [been] a good step in this direction where you can play together across platforms.”
Normally, games with PC and mobile versions keep players separated in order to ensure fairness, but Segerstrale said that the team has worked hard to ensure that players will all have a fair chance, and no platform will have an advantage over the other. In Fortnite, mobile gamers are usually outgunned by PC gamers in particular.
“Fundamentally, we have a cross-platform game engine, and so, it is the same game,” Segerstrale said. “We expect to be one of the only games out there with true competitive parity. You can play with your friends, be they on a PC, Chromebook, iOS device, etc., knowing they are all just as competitive.”
Super Evil is also kicking off a strategic partnership with Chinese Internet giant NetEase, which will support Vainglory’s 4.0 cross-platform launch in China. One of the reasons Vainglory can move to the PC is because the developers upgraded the game from three players versus three players to five versus five.
“We’ve been working on this for the better part of this year,” Segerstrale said. “We’ve always believed in a multi-platform future, but we always thought it was far away.”

While going cross platform is a cool feature, it’s also an admission of failure for Vainglory’s initial approach of trying to gather a massive audience on mobile devices.

“No, not really,” he said. “This year has been in some ways a transition year for us, as we have moved from a three-v-three player game to a full-fledged five-v-five game. What struck us with the success of these large-scale games like [PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds] and Fortnite, for the West in particular, has clearly been a preference for mobile in core games that are cross platform. We believe cross-platform play will be very important for competitive games in the future. We think that is where gaming is heading in the next five to 10 years. It will be very rare to have a multiplayer game that is platform specific in the future.”
Since its launch in 2015, Super Evil Megacorp has tried to make Vainglory into an esport by shooting for triple-A status in terms of both graphics quality and speed. The game has endured for a while, and Super Evil Megacorp has been able to raise a lot of money to sustain it, but it has not gained mass audiences like Tencent’s Arena of Valor.
The company has been able to make big changes — like accommodating spectating, going five versus five, and going cross platform — because the company owns its proprietary cross-platform E.V.I.L. game engine. By tweaking the engine, Super Evil Megacorp can make big changes in the game and upgrade its graphics, controls, and other features.
The game can run at up to 120 frames per second, and the game was originally designed for tablets. In the touch-based title, players continuously mash a finger on the screen to keep attacking other players. It’s a very simple control system. That’s why Segerstrale thinks it will fare well on the PC.
It will be a big test to see if mobile gamers can hold their own against mouse-and-keyboard players in Vainglory.
Is mobile a weakening platform?

Vainglory started on iOS and Android as a three-versus-three game. Now, it is five-versus-five cross platform. Segerstrale said console players will be able to join the game by the end of 2019.
In other news, ESP Gaming will be hosting Vainglory’s 2018 World Invitational on December 16 in Los Angeles featuring the very first PC-versus-mobile show match to set the stage for cross-platform competitive play in 2019.
“We are broadening our early alpha, and from Monday onwards, we are in a more mature alpha to invite more players to make it better,” Segerstrale said. “[We’ll] release it more broadly by 2019, and we’ll release it on console by the end of 2019, again with competitive parity.”
China expansion
Super Evil’s strategic partnership with NetEase will support the cross-platform launch in China.
“Vainglory will be a defining title for cross-platform competitive gaming, and we are committed to work closely with Super Evil Megacorp for the launch of Vainglory 4.0 in China,” said William Ding, CEO of NetEase, in a statement.
Vainglory 4.0 will be available for free on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android in early 2019. Vainglory 4.0 will feature cross-platform play, a re-worked cross-platform UI, improved communications, new event-based game modes, and much more.
And when it comes to esports, Segerstrale said that players will be able to play the game on the platform they prefer.
Super Evil Megacorp has about 60 employees, which is down from higher numbers in earlier years.
